This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

Standard procedures

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If you want to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, go to Wikipedia:Translation.Or instead you can leave a message on the contributing user's talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to AfD. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{notenglish}} to {{subst:afd}} and the other deletion steps should be carried out.

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as Xerox or What Language Is This? to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Please check for copyvio before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for CSD G12 can be speedily deleted with {{db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on WP:CP.) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.

When a page listed here has been translated, its entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

The accuracy of translation would be a problem, leading to OR. Most Indian languages WP translators (like me) will end up translating based on "current" usage and not per the language at the point in time, and the difference can be quite significant, which is where the OR comes in as it becomes more interpretive. For something like this, translations and IAST/ISO text should be available in books (perhaps not on gbooks).- 04:15, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, SpacemanSpiff. It's like instead of getting a translation of Caedmon's Hymn, an editor translates it for wikipedia and publishes their translation: pure OR. The translations themselves, in the case of strota from this era are a source of contention among two main factions of scholars, also, or used to be. -- | 04:28, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

• I think the only translations that are original research are those of ancient texts or maybe of some kinds of modern literature (poetry, for example). I once had a dispute with an editor about the legend on a coin. It was clearly legible literate Arabic, obvious to anyone who knows the language. This other editor took the position that the English Wikipedia could not publish anyone's translation unless it had been published somewhere else (by a "reputable" scholar"). Maybe SOME translations are OR, but clearly not all of them. --cbdorsett (talk) 05:02, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
  • But we're obviously not in that group since what we're doing here is translating. It's an important ancient poem/chant, though. I think translating most poetry would be OR, in particular translating famous or ancient poetry. What we translate we can do so without introducing our own research because it's simple factual knowledge.
  • That being said, since we won't be translating the chant itself, can this just be moved from the category, because what it needs is a resource, not a translation? -- | 05:08, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

The page creator posted on the talk page, saying it was meant for the Arabic-speaking community and asking if it could be moved to the Arabic Wikipedia. That's what needs to be done now. It's completely incomprehensible as it stands as an English-language article. Not even sure if the dates are in international or Islamic format, so is this about a modern or medieval person. Ingvar Þór Kale

The language of this article was Icelandic. I've translated it as well as I can, but it needs checking over for accuracy of translation . . . and also of facts. There are no dates, and when looking for sources I found what seems to be a discrepancy as to the nature of his injury (as well as where he was born). It's also a bit weird that there is no article on is.wikipedia. If I were sure it was accurate I would have posted it there, but they have relatively few articles and maybe aren't ready for articles on all their footballers yet. One site does say he played for the national under-23s, so he probably squeaks by our standards, but the article doesn't have that info.
